Mercy
Home provides residential and supportive programs and
services to persons with developmental disabilities.

Residential
Services
If you were to step
inside a residence, you would see that people are enjoying life.
Supported and guided by dedicated staff, each person we serve
has opportunities to master the skills needed to become more
independent. For some, mastery means learning to choose clothes,
cut with a knife, or make a sandwich to take to Day Program.
For others, mastery is more about learning how to make friends
and join a local volunteer organization to get to know their
neighbors. If life is about choices, then living at Mercy
Home is all about choosing among healthy, life-giving
and interesting activities.

Programs:
What is Medicaid Service Coordination?

What is MSC?
Medicaid Service Coordination
(MSC) assists persons with developmental disabilities in
accessing the services and supports needed to achieve their
unique goals and desires. This program is sponsored by the NYS
Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities
(OMR/DD). The MSC program uses a person-centered
planning model to develop an Individualized Service Plan
(ISP) that is amended as the person’s needs and dreams
change. Mercy Home has qualified Medicaid Service Coordinators
available who would to like work with you and your family.
Who is eligible?
Any person diagnosed
with a developmental disability, prior to age 21, as defined
by the New York State OMR/DD, and presently enrolled in
Medicaid is eligible to apply.

Respite
Services
Mercy Home operates
3 Saturday Respite Programs and each one is just right for those
who attend. All of the programs provide door to door transportation
and run approximately 38 weeks during the year.
At
our newest program for children, you will see
a beehive of activity. Staff help children who live with
autism learn to meet, greet and socialize with peers, focus
on games, listen to stories, try alternate ways to communicate
when speech is not yet possible, and enjoy calming effects of
music therapy. The environment is highly structured, but there
are always opportunities for fun.
At our program for
older children and teens with autism, the activities
are more grown up to capture the interest of participants who
respond to the careful structure provided. Exercise, reading,
music, art and dance therapy are also a part of each week's
schedule.
At
our adult program, you would see how participants
gather together, plan their day with staff, and go about the
business of having some fun together. Trips to museums, enjoying
a movie or trying out a new meal recipe are just some activities
to be explored.
What our respite programs
have in common is that each one gives parents and family members
Saturdays "off". In addition, families have periodic
group sessions for education and sharing ideas and all are welcome
to participate in the social and recreational activities sponsored
by the agency throughout the year.

Day Habilitation
Mercy Home's
Day Habilitation program offers an alternative setting for people
who struggle in the traditional day program setting.
Participants are afforded

that will help them develop the skills they need to be as independent
as possible.

The
James P. Slattery, CPA, Creative Arts Center
The success of the
Mitsui Creative Arts Center inspired the opening
of our second center, the James P. Slattery, CPA, Creative
Arts Center in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. This center
offers the same great music, art and dance experiences to children
with autism and has the added feature of providing training
opportunities to special education college majors from St.
Joseph College, where the center is located.
Families have been thrilled by their child’s response
at the Center and have seen a wonderful carry-over at home as
well.

ART
PROGRAM
Under the direction
of a skilled artist, the art group meets twice a month and members
have the opportunity to explore their creative sides using a
variety of mediums. A yearly arts festival is held to display
their talents.
Innovations In Programs... Activities Plus
Understanding that
competent and skilled staff are what our consumers deserve,
Mercy Home initiated a mentoring program, headed
by two very experienced and innovative direct support professionals.
Our mentors assist in orientating new staff and encouraging
experienced staff to provide all the supports our consumers
need to expand their interests, involve themselves in the communities
in which they live, and try out new activities. In addition
to working with staff in each home, our Mentors also sponsor
ACTIVITIES PLUS evenings at which consumers choose from a variety
of activities, socialize with friends, and enjoy very individualized
guidance from our staff.
